Happy Friday, folks!! Today’s post will be short and sweet. The second prompt for the August challenge sponsored by @spilledmilknails and @polishedbybeckie is a gradient, which I’ve never done before. Of course my nails would have to be kind of short when I tried it, which is what I believe lead to my lacklustre results. Oh well, practice makes perfect, right?? 🙂
Inspired by a movie
Hey, everybody, guess what I have for you today? Book review! No. Nail art! The movie I chose to represent my Day 3 entry in the Comic-Con Geek Week Nail Art challenge is Star Trek (2009).

Since I am a horrible artist, I chose to use my nail art to represent the uniforms of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. I even used my brushes again to paint the little symbols on the breast of the uniform! I tried doing them on a plastic bag like I did for my Day 1 submission HERE, but that did not work and I ended up painting them directly on the nail by hand. Oddly enough, they came off the bag overnight and now I have random gold Star Trek emblems on my workspace. Ahhh, memories.
So that’s my movie-inspired manicure, I hope you like it! Can I tell you how excited I am to see everyone else’s manis?? I think I just did! Use the links below to check them out for yourself.
As always, thanks for stopping by. Hope you have a great Hump Day!!
Inspired by a TV Show
Hello geeks and nail polish aficionados alike! Today’s post is another for the Comic-Con Geek Week Nail Art Challenge, day 2, which is inspired by a TV show. My choice is LOST.
Yes, I’m a Lostie. The show is available in its entirety on Blue-Ray and Netflix, and I would definitely recommend you viewing it if you haven’t already. To give you a short synopsis in case you are not familiar with it, it’s the story of plane-wreck surviving castaways who find themselves on an island with seemingly mystical powers. The series encompasses 6 seasons (120 episodes) of wonderful story telling, innumerable plot twists and a cast that comes together so perfectly for both the purposes of this tale and keeping at least one female’s attention the WHOLE time (any Sawyer fans, out there?). My oh my. Anyhow, on to the nail polish.
The part of the show I chose to represent with my manicure is Charlie Pace’s taped fingers on which he wrote several words over the course of the tape’s life on the show (Love, Hate, Fate, etc). Since I didn’t want to leave my thumb out of the deal, I included the numbers that are intertwined throughout the story and the various survivors’ lives. I meant for them to be more randomly positioned, but I couldn’t find my super-fine Sharpie. Poo. The polish I used is OPI’s Alpine Snow and a black Sharpie. Another shot, this time showcasing a nail polish bottle in my hand.
While I did unsuccessfully search the entire interwebz for a picture of Shannon painting her toenails on the beach as the other survivors searched the wreckage for life-saving food, water and medicine, I did find a picture of her sunning herself while they did so. Ain’t she a peach? LOL
So, what do you think? I can’t wait to see everyone else’s manicures this week, make sure to check them out, too, using the links below!
Thanks for stopping by!!
Inspired by a book
This week is my first nail art challenge, the Comic-Con Geek Week Nail Art challenge. Today’s nail art comes to you with the help of a tutorial from Savannah at Oh So Pretty The Diaries. See it here if you’d like to try it yourself. Being a fan of The Hunger Games book series, I had seen many ‘Girl on Fire’ flame nails before, but never had the guts to try it myself. Until now. 🙂 As soon as I heard about this challenge and the topic of a book was included, I knew I had to participate. Below is a list of the polishes that I used to create this manicure.
Red: Mamba from Color Club
Orange: Riveting from China Glaze (Hunger Games collection)
Yellow: Neon Melon from Sinful Colors
Black: Hot Topic’s Blackheart Cursed
As you can see, I used the Blackheart Cursed as a base, then the Mamba, Riveting and Neon Melon to make the flames. Here is a shot of them pre-application. This will need more practice, but not bad for a bad artist on the first attempt, I think! First time using my brushes, so it was pretty exciting. Please ignore the chip on the ring finger. 😦
My manicure depicts Katniss’ costume at the first tribute parade. She and her partner in the games, Peta, have costumes that appear to be fully aflame but leave them unharmed. There is another scene in the movie during which she has an evening gown that has a similar effect. the ’12’ on my thumb represents their home region, District 12. The manicure shot below shows one of the polishes used in this design, China Glaze’s Riveting from The Hunger Games collection. Appropriate, wouldn’t you say?
Here is a shot of Katniss (played by Jennifer Lawrence, LOVE her!) in her flaming costume from the tribute parade scene. Did any of you read the books and/or see the movie? Thoughts? I loved the books and enjoyed the movie, although (as usual) there was much that they just couldn’t fit into a 2 hour movie. I still plan to see the remaining movies they will make based on this series of books.
So, that’s it folks. I hope you liked my first submission this week. Hang around and see the rest and let me know what you think. Have a great Monday, all!!
